LCHEC is now registering students for the pharmacy tech exam prep seminar starting October 5th. Prior to enrolling in this seminar, students must demonstrate that they have at least 16 hours of volunteer shadowing or paid employment in a pharmacy. Students who need to schedule shadowing should contact LCHEC for assistance.

The Pharmacy Tech Exam Prep Seminar prepares students to understand the laws affecting pharmacies, recognize and process drug orders in both retail and hospital settings, learn special rules required for controlled medications, learn administrative duties of a pharmacy technician, and obtain a basic understanding of pharmacology and pharmacological classes for the ultimate purpose of taking and passing the PTCB national pharmacy technician exam.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, certified pharmacy technicians earn a median annual salary of $27,800 in Texas and $26,780 in Killeen. Pharmacy technicians may find employment in stand-alone and independent pharmacies (such as Walgreens or CVS), pharmacies inside stories (such as Walmart, H-E-B or Sam’s), mail-order pharmacies, hospitals, compounding labs, health plans and other institutions.

The course cost is $895 which covers tuition, textbooks and the national certification exam. The class will meet Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct 5 through Oct 22. Scholarships may be available for those who qualify.
